More about the Route
The 3rd Himalaya Classic Rally 2008
The Himalayas is the most famous range of mountains in the world with scenery and history to match. Join us in following this great range of mountain from Amritsar in the west, through Nepal to Darjeeling, then into the little known kingdom of Bhutan before heading south to finish in Calcutta.
As in 2007 the Rally starts in Udaipur, one of the most beautiful cities in Rajasthan and home of His Highness Arvid Singh Mewar, the Maharana of Udaipur, who is one of India's true classic car enthusiasts. The cars are flagged off from Shiv Niwas Palace.
Rajasthan promises to live up to its colourful reputation with stops at Jodhpur (yes, original home of those riding trousers), and Gajner Palace near Bikaner, where we are arranging for a camel ride into the desert for supper. The roads across the desert are a great introduction to the driving techniques required for this month long adventure.
The beautiful Himalayas beckon after Rajasthan and we will follow them from Amritsar in the west all the way through Nepal and into Bhutan. The experience of driving in the mountains on the road up to Dharamsala when we start winding through the mountains.
After Bhutan we drop down to the plains and explore the mighty Bhramaputra before entering Bangladesh and the road to Calcutta.
In between drives which last from a few hours to a full day, we have arranged for the best and often unmatched luxurious accommodation possible for each night stop. From Palaces to historic houses the night's rest will be the pick of the best.
