End of Rally - Calcutta
One of the greatest cities of India, Calcutta buzzes with activity and history. It was the capital city for the East India Company, then the British Raj, and as a result has some of the most extraordinary buildings in India. Some are neglected and falling down but there has been a revival of interest recently and a conservation programme is under way.
Calcutta is a city that challenges people's expectations. There is poverty, but there is also a thriving art scene, an acclaimed international film festival, new restaurants and shops opening all the time, and a cultural buzz.
The New Market is just next to the hotel, and the Victoria Memoral and Fort William are nearby in the middle of the 988-acre Maidan park. Go to the races and bet on the horses, walk along the river and take a boat trip to see the famous Howrah bridge, or admire the 200 year Banyan Tree in the Botanical Gardens that marks the beginning of the Great Trunk Road.
We celebrate our arrival in Calcutta, and successful completion of the adventure, with a Grand End of Rally Dinner!
