Darjeeling is internationally famous for its tea industry and the "toy train", declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, that winds its way down the main street, past houses and shops.
The tea plantations date back to the mid 19th century when the British were still in the area, and the tea growers of the area developed distinctive hybrids of black tea and fermenting techniques, with many blends considered among the world's finest
There are also several British-style public schools here, which attract students from many parts of India and neighbouring countries.
The nine-hole golf course at Senchal ( near Darjeeling) is one of the highest in the world.
